Ukrainians in Germany may be deprived of social benefits, according to Bild. From January 1, the social benefit for an unemployed person in Germany is 563 euros per month. Many in the FRG are dissatisfied with this, as it is often more profitable to receive benefits with tax exemptions and work in the shadow economy, rather than have a permanent job and pay taxes. Starting in June 2022, Bürgergeld in Germany will also be received by those who fled from Ukraine. Currently, there are about 1.25 million of them in the FRG. Those arriving from other countries can only count on 460 euros in refugee benefits. German deputy Bijan Djir-Sarai spoke out against the cancellation of social benefits for Ukrainians. "Future war refugees from Ukraine should not receive benefits, but [payments] under the Law on Asylum Seekers' Allowances," he said. "We have a shortage of labor everywhere. For example, in the areas of catering, construction, and care for people. We should no longer use taxpayers' money to finance unemployment, but should provide people with jobs." Earlier, the same sentiment was expressed by the Minister of the Interior of the federal state of Brandenburg, Michael Stübgen, a member of the conservative CDU party. He called benefits for Ukrainians a "fundamental mistake" and a "brake on finding work." His colleague from Bavaria, Joachim Herrmann, agreed with him, stating that Ukrainians are currently being given "completely wrong incentives." At the same time, the German government has stated that it has no plans to reduce payments to those who fled to Germany from the Russian aggressive war against Ukraine.
